Andrew Simms from The Guardian reported on Tuesday, 8th June, 2010 on the effects of supermarkets and how "big stores destroy local economies, and hit the poorest especially hard".

  1. Read the comments that follow this article, they are almost all critical of it.
    If the local shops suffer when Waitrose arrives in Chipping Sodbury it will be the fault of the people who used these shops before and subsequently deserted them for Waitrose. It will not be the fault of Waitrose. You have a choice. Why would people, like me, who currently use local supermarkets but also use the high street shops for vegetables etc suddenly stop using them ?
    They can build as many supermarkets as they like, all that will do is give us more choice and make them fight harder for our business.
    I shall be writing to the people mentioned in the latest SOS leaflet but only to ensure they understand there are many people who actually support this plan.
